Ring in the New Year with a Growth Mindset: Activities for Teenagers

New Year Growth Mindset Creative Activities 2018 www.traceeorman.com

When you return from break this year, take a moment to allow your students to reflect on the things they've already accomplished and look to what they hope to achieve the remainder of the school year. These activities can promote a growth (rather than fixed) mindset for students.

Self-reflection builds self-awareness--an integral component in developing emotional intelligence. My activities challenge students to really think deeply and stretch their minds. For example, one activity makes them come up with 20 things they do well. This is a perfect activity for developing a growth mindset. Even though coming up with 20 things is tough for a teenager, the exercise helps them not only reflect on their own skills and traits but builds self-esteem.

While developing a growth mindset is important, it's also essential to promote creative thinking in your classroom. Start the new year with some simple prompts that challenge your students to think differently. My activities include an acrostic poem using numbers rather than letters. That added difficulty pushes your students' critical-thinking skills.

Another activity adds a fun scavenger hunt (who doesn't like scavenger hunts?) and allows students to create their own. This can get your students moving around the room (and perhaps the school, at your discretion), promoting physical activity in the classroom while improving student performance.

I've also included a reading comprehension activity using the song lyrics to Auld Lang Syne. The creative component of that activity challenges students to write their own New Year-themed song lyrics.

Of course, I did not forget to include the old standby writing prompt, which asks students to think about how their new year resolutions (I define "resolutions" for them within the prompt).

All of my activities include both traditional "print & go" pages and interactive notebook foldable activities.

The "2018" short prompts make a great bulletin board, classroom, and/or hallway display.

Administrators love to see students visually display a growth mindset and students love reading one another's goals and things they are looking forward to in the new year. I include blank ones so you can have your students decorate them with their Top 20 list if you wish.

Displaying your student's work gives them a daily reminder of the things they hope to improve, achieve, and look forward to throughout the year. I usually take them down after a month or so but at the end of the year I pass them back and ask students to reflect on whether they achieved what they hoped they would. It's another way to reinforce self-reflection and build emotional intelligence.

You can find all of these activities in ONE download (which is updated yearly, so it's a huge bargain!) here:

Happy New Year! I'd like to take a moment to express my appreciation to the folks at TeachersPayTeachers, as well as to you, my fellow teachers. For this ability to give back to so many, especially, I am extremely grateful.

In addition, I am thankful for my family, friends, and colleagues. After losing both of my parents within the past two years, I have a new outlook on what is truly important in life and these people mean more to me than anything else. 💕

New Year Resolutions & Goals Activities

New Years Goals Activities

If you are looking for some activities to use with your students when you return to school, you're in the right place. My 2017 New Year Activities are appropriate for middle and high school students, though I've had some upper-elementary teachers tell me they love using them with their students, as well.

The bundle comes with eight activities, paper-saver options, and four interactive-notebook activities. The activities vary, but practice critical-thinking and writing skills. There's also an outlet for your creative students.

SET GOALS
Have your students set goals for the remainder of the school year (or the year in general) with these visual-appealing 2017 prompts. Students love to decorate them and they make great bulletin-board displays.

SCAVENGER HUNT
Have some fun with a classroom scavenger hunt. Students have to find items that fit the 2017 clues. Then, they get to create their own scavenger hunt. This is a great activity to get your students up and moving around the room. It's perfect for a bell-ringer or exit slip activity, too.

WRITING POETRY
Use the numbers in 2017 to write an acrostic poem. This can be challenging for younger students, though it seems simple. Some students like to choose just one word per line, but others will be more creative and use more than one word per line. However they wish to complete their poem is always fine with me. I never like to place limits on their creativity.

CLOSE READING POETRY ANALYSIS
Students read the song lyrics to "Auld Lang Syne" and analyze it for meaning, figurative language, and vocabulary in context. This is an activity that can be used year after year (is not specific to 2017 or any other year). The answer key is included.

New! Pretty in Pink and Free 2012 Graphics

I uploaded a couple of new graphics packages yesterday for those of you who like my backgrounds and frames (and more coming, I promise).

One of the packages is called "Pretty in Pink" and features graphics in shades of pink, red, and purple. It also has over 30 heart images in numerous colors. My backgrounds can be shaped to become sidebars, or layered with your own frames. They are versatile and saved as png files for your convenience.

The other package I uploaded is a freebie. It has 12 "2012" graphics. What makes these unique is the transparent cut-outs and backgrounds. Below are examples of how these can be used in your products.

I hope you all have a great 2012 and finish your school year strong! Make sure to stop by my store today and tomorrow to enjoy my New Year's sale on EVERYTHING - including CDs!

Happy New Year! Back to School Writing Activity

Happy New Year, Everyone!
I hope you are enjoying this holiday break. I know I have not been the greatest at updating this blog, but one of my resolutions is to do a better job of sharing my teaching resources, classroom activities, and ideas with you.

One activity you can share with your students when you go back to school is this free download of New Year Activities. It includes four different activities and one that can be used for a new school year or new class (if you have a new group of students at semester or in the fall).

The first activity is a basic printable for writing a resolution. Students should choose something they want to accomplish or make sure they don't do for 2012 and write about it in complete sentences.

The second activity is a list-writing goal-setting activity with a twist. Students play off the words twenty-twelve and write twenty things that they want to do or accomplish in 2012 and twelve things they want to make sure they don't do.

The third activity is an acrostic poem-writing activity, but instead of using letters, the numbers (or words) for 2012 are used to begin each line. Students should start each line with the words Two, Zero, One, and Two (though they may use the actual numbers, it would just be read "Two..." and so on). Here's an example:
  (2) Two times I've searched
  (0) Zero times I've found my
  (1) One true love, but
  (2) Two more times might just do it.
Students can write an nontraditional acrostic and use the words in the middle of the line, as well. When it comes to poetry, anything goes!

The fourth activity involves a scavenger hunt for the students to find things in the classroom. It involves some critical and even creative thinking on their part. Feel free to tweak it to work for you and your classroom.

The last activity is a generic writing prompt for the start of the new year. It can be used for a back-to-school activity, when you have a new group of students, or any new year.

I hope you enjoy these activities!
Make sure to download them {HERE}

If you like the clip art, I'll be posting it soon in my store.
